Palm Sunday 1965 - The Forgotten Super Outbreak
April 11th, 1965.
Its a beautiful sunny afternoon across northern Indiana and residents all across the state are beginning to venture outdoors to enjoy the pleasant spring weather after a long and brutal winter. None of them could have imagined that in just a few short hours they would be at the center of one of the worst tornado outbreaks in American history.
On April 11th, 1965, a catastrophic tornado outbreak would devastate the midwestern states of Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, producing over 50 tornadoes and claiming the lives of 266 people, causing apocalyptic levels of destruction matched only by the 1925 Tri-state tornado and the 1974 and 2011 Super Outbre...

It's sad that this tornado happened almost 3 years ago (crazy) as of 2024. I wonder what the towns look like now in 2024. What happened in the candle factory was disgusting. The employees were threatened to be fired if they took shelter, resulting in those 8 deaths, truly sad and disgusting. Very good informational video about a tornado that will change the thousands of lives and dozens of towns in the direct path. You did well about informing us about a deadly tornado. I'm surprised that the picture founded in New Albany, IN (120 miles away) wasn't ripped apart and in good shape, that's how truly powerful, deadly, and terrifying tornadoes are, especially at night. Keep it up and I like your videos!

I was 9 years old on Palm Sunday 1965, living in Kalamazoo, MI. It was my First Communion Day. I will never forget how beautiful the day started out. And then--how the storms rolled in without any warning, how the sky was a sickly mud-yellow to the northwest, boiling black clouds relentlessly pouring up from the southwest. We were outside watching when my Dad shouted that a funnel cloud was going over the house and we should all get in the basement NOW! Thankfully it did not touch down but I believe it may have been the one that hit Cooper Township in Kalamazoo County. After that I became obsessed with tornadoes. I have taken Skywarn training multiple times, when severe weather threatens, or even when it doesn't, I am always weather aware and watching the sky. Lately we have had a couple of tornadoes here in Michigan that literally were under the radar on days where there was not supposed to be any tornadoes; one killed a little kid in Livonia. My philosophy is: I do not care what the SPC says--if there are thunderstorms there is a potential for tornadoes and no tornado is ever going to catch me unaware. I am so glad that our warning systems are so much better than in 1965 and I say there is no excuse for people not being aware that the weather could turn dangerous.

Also the reason why the sky was that color was because of all the dust kicked up by the Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin twisters earlier in the day.

My family was directly involved in this tragedy. (We lived between Koontz Lake and Lapaz, In.) While my father was milking my grandmother came running out to tell him that the farm across the road looked like it was on fire. It was the tornado. At our other farm my mama was doing spring yard clean up and a man’s flannel shirt came floating out of the sky as there was a tornado directly over us and she did not know. Anyway, it killed our neighbor, Findlay Patterson, the Holm family, and the Hulse family who saw the tornado’s and tried to outrun it in their car. The parents died and the kids in back seat suffered horrible injuries. We had 6 deaths on our road. My dad and Uncles went from farm to farm helping to put animals out of their misery due to their horrific injuries on April 12th, the following day. All totaled there were over two hundred to three hundred deaths. This was for many years the deadliest tornado outbreak in history and still ranks in the top 3, I believe. Also, it was hard to make sense of how the trajectory of the tornado had destroyed certain houses and farms while not affecting others…people did not know there were in fact 3 tornadoes in our area. The twins (pictured) believed to be F4 strength and a third in the exact same path which hit about 20 minutes later. We lost out-buildings, but not the main houses. While Palm Sunday has religious meanings for most people, for those of us who lived through this, Palm Sunday will always represent the horrific tornadoes.

Take a close look at the SELS Severe Weather Forecast (it would now be called a Tornado Watch) at 2:30 in this video. The text actually says "A few severe thunderstorms with large hail, damaging winds and one or two tornadoes are expected from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. CST this Sunday afternoon in the area" of the forecast/watch. It doesn't say anything about "supercell" thunderstorms "capable of producing large and powerful tornadoes". If SELS was really expecting a major tornado outbreak, it's kind of hard to tell just from reading this text. Were they still in the mindset of not wanting to create public panic? Unlike today when the Storm Prediction Center openly mentions the possibility/probability of major outbreaks of violent tornadoes, sometimes several days in advance.

I never knew the El Reno in 2011 hit a drilling rig and absolutely destroyed it despite the rig being so heavy. I've been at a rig site before so knowing a towering structure like that as heavy as it is being completely jacked up by a tornado is insane to think about
